Research shows that colon cancer may change the approaches in treatment.

Lawson Health institute researchers claimed to identify a new stem cell population in the colon linked to cancer growth on June 11. According to the press release published on Eureka Alert “The findings will significantly change the way we study and treat colon cancer.”

What is colon cancer – Colon is the part of the digestive system in human body. The colon is a six-foot long, muscular tube connecting the small intestine to the rectum. Colon cancer is a tumor that develops in cells of the colon.

Press release states that researchers have identified a previously unknown, long-lived radiation resistant stem cell population in the colon. They also found that these stem cells could give rise to colonic tumors and sustain their growth.. In this study, the researchers sought to identify whether more than one tissue stem cell population exists within the colon, which could be a source of colon cancer.

Dr. Samuel Asfaha, a clinician-scientist at Lawson and an assistant professor of medicine at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, said in the press release “The identification of more than one stem cell pool in the colon has proven challenging. These findings are exciting, as we have identified an important new target for cancer therapy. It is also proof that more than one stem cell can give rise to and sustain tumors, telling us that our cancer therapy needs to target more than one stem cell pool.’

According to Asfaha, The identification of the cellular origin of cancer, specifically colorectal cancer, is critical to the understanding of how cancer arises, as well as for the identification of new targets for drug therapy.

The Press release also reports that until now, stem cell population that was radiation sensitive was believed to link to colon cancer, and physician were supposed to do the radiation therapy.

It is estimated that there will be 25,100 Canadians will be diagnosed with colon cancer in 2015. get tested today. call us at 1855 663 3422.

BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes – BRCA1 and BRCA 2 known as a Breast Cancer Susceptibility Gene 1 and Breast Cancer Susceptibility Gene 2 are human genes and works as tumor suppressors.

How BRCA1 and BRCA2 connect to cancer? – When any of those genes mutated, it causes DNA damage and it might not be able to repair properly, and as a results cell can develop additional genetic alterations. Inherited mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 then increase the risk of breast and ovarian cancer.

NOTE: BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation can be inherited from a person’s mother or father. Anyone who has this type of inherited mutation genes in his/her body can be at risk of developing cancer.

Breast cancer statistics – Breast Cancer Society of Canada has some shocking estimated figures in 2015.

. An estimated 25,000 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 5,000 will die from it.

. It is expected that 220 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 60 will die from it.

Who should go for the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene test? – Anyone who has a family history that suggests the presence of the possible harmful mutation in BRCA1 and BRCA2 can go for the test. There are many people who were adopted and do not know their family history, they can go for the test as well. Ashkenazi Jewish ethnicity is one of highest risk of developing cancer; anyone from that community can do the test.
